In my philosophy class, my professor brought up the ‘brain in a vat’ argument. I was mind fucked for a good 2 days.
The way we see the world is based off of sensation and perception, right? We use our five senses to navigate through life. All of the senses we experience are neural impulses sent from our sensory receptors to our brain. Well, what if scientists removed a brain from a human, put the brain into a jar with life-sustaining liquid (kind of like the skull), hooked the brain to a ‘supercomputer’ that was able to create the same neural impulses that our receptors make, would the brain be able to make a new life; perceive a new world? I mean, if the super computer was programmed to queue life-staged impulses (baby senses /adolescence/adults/elderly), would the brain create a whole new world that it would be living in?
“What is real? How to do you define real? If you’re talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can feel, taste and see, then real is simply electrical impulses interpreted by your brain.” - Morpheus (The Matrix)
